Beaten and battered but still running

For ca 15 år eller
mere siden blev jeg rigtig godt træt af den måde de fleste
standard miniracere opførte sig på banen. Mens enkelte
"heldige" eksemplarer bare tog alt og alle med storm og sikkert
og elegant gav alt andet baghjul.

15 years or more ago I was
getting rather fed up with the behavior and roadhold of most of the
discount slotracers available at the time. Some could fire away and
elegantly and gracefully outrace all the others leaving the unlucky
"monday" cars behind. So what can be done to: |
| Polistils Audu Quattro viste sig at være en rigtig hurtig bil. Men den bevægede sig som en vraltende and og var alt for dramatisk og ubekvem. Jeg besluttede at gøre noget ved det. | The Polistil Audi Quattro turned out to be a fast car but it moved like a walking duck on the track. Far too dramatic and uncomfortable. I decided to do something about it. |

Dette er hvad jeg endte med. De fleste bruger
megen tid på detaljer, som man ikke ser når starten er gået.
Denne bil nåede at få Polistils "special tuned"
racemotor som gav den dobbelt så mange omdrejninger. 40.000om.
som de skrev. |

This is what we ended up with. Some spend alot of time refining details. We didn't. You can't see refined details when the race is on. This car got the Polistil "Special Tuned" racemotor who gave it up to 40.000 revs pr minute. I belive it allright, the tone indicated it....Amazing! That was the beginning of the end of the standard rubber tyres. They got too slippery on the floor laque-painted Masonite tracks. |
| Det er efter min mening de eneste slicks der duer på hvilken somhelst overflade. Banen bliver fedtet af alt muligt, men mest af alt nikotin. De fleste af vore gummi dæk er forgået og blevet hårde og stive efter eksperimenter med kemikalier som sprit og renset benzin. Som knægt brugte jeg noget der hed methylsalicylat. Sikkert noget giftigt stads men hvem tænkte på det i 60'erne. Vand og en smule opvaskemiddel gør tricket hvis man da ikke bare vil nuldre. Der er bid omgående og banen kan osse tåle en omgang opvask fra tid til anden. Synd! men man må ryge et andet sted. |

In my oppinion this the only tyre that will work on every surface. the track gets dusty/greasy of all kinds of reasons but most of all nicotine. Most of my tyres have hardened and stiffended after our exsperiments with chemicals like alcohol and kerosene. When I was a kid we were told to use something called Mehtylcalicylate. It was probably very toxic but who cared in the 60ties. Water and the stuff you use for dishing does the trick if you're not just into cuttling your tyres. They bite at once and the track will do good with a bit of Dishing once in a while. Pity, you have to smoke elsewhere. |

Det er altid sjovt at starte fra bunden med
en bil ingen har eller kan få, medmindre de har nerve til at stjæle
den fra dig. Denne dille begyndte faktisk med at jeg byggede chassis/motor
delen fra en Polistil på denne billige men vellignende BMW jeg
købte på en tur til Jugoslavien. Ja, du har ret, det er
længe siden. |
Læg mærke til spidshjulet på dette chassis, det har gnavet sig op i ophænget. Øjensyligt ikke konstrueret til sådan et moment. Motoren blir holdt nede med ...tape Notice the pinion has eaten |
It is allways fun to get a good scratch car
and build something noone has and noone can get unless they have the
guts to to steal it from you. It all started with attaching the motor
chassis from a Polistil to this cheap but well looking little BMW I
bought on a trip to Jugoslavia. Yes you're right, it's a long time ago.

SCALEXTRICS

Som guitarist har jeg altid lejer. De sidder
i enden på strengene, stål som bronze. For at holde forenden
i ro var fjedre nødvendig på denne forholdsvis tunge bil.
De blev lavet af en G streng fra min guitar. Resultatet blev at forenden
hoppede og dansede som en gal og mine skumplast "støddæmpere"
blev opfundet. Styretappen skal modtage sin energi upåvirket af
chassis'ets vibrationer og bevægelser og dens svingarm er derfor
monteret så langt tilbage som lige foran baghjulene

Being a guitar player I have an easy way to get bearings. They are attached to the end of each string I break and I do that frequently. In order to keep the front end of the car calm and steady, springs were needed on this relative heavy car. They were made of a guitar string "G" to be accurate. The result was a disaster. The front jumped up and down vibrating like crazy and the foam shock absorbers were invented. The pickup pin must be able to recieve the power unaffected by the chassis chocks and vibrations. Its swing arm is mounted as far back as right in front of the rear axle. |

Så var problemet løst og hun løb som en drøm.
Kun fantasien sætter grænser.
Det drejer sig om at ha' det sjovt. Det behøver ikke at koste
penge.

Alle de viste biler har ikke kørt
siden banen blev pakket sammen og endte på loftet i midten af
90'erne. De er fotograferet med det støv, de skader og knubs
de fik undervejs og den patina der gør dem lidt mere interessante. Jeg modtager gerne feedback til siden eller gode tilsvarenede tips, spørgsmål og ideer fra evt besøgende. |
All the cars shown here hasnt seen a track
since the track was taken down and put on the attic once in the mid
nineties. They are photografed with the dust, the bruces and breakages
they suffered on the way and the patina that makes them just a little
more interesting. The kids are grown big. The adults amongst myself
went busy with other things. Internet was only something you heard of.
I must say a lot has happened since then and it is with great plesure
I learn that this sport is alive and kicking. It makes the manufacturers
compete about sending the best cars on the market and the standard and
the roadhold of theese cars are therefore recognizeable better.
